Bath City Morris were formed by Tubby Reynolds in 1967 based at Bath University, consisting mainly of Bath University students (such as John Connolly and Steve Hudson), with some locals and some women from Domsci (Bath Domestic Science College). As a result, the side changed almost completely every three years as students passed through the University.

Some local men joined as well, such as Phil Butler, Mike Harrington, Robin Pollard, Zot, Tom Randall, and later formed Apley Morris Men to enable them to dance outside term-times. The side practised on a Wednesday evening, firstly in the South Building, then the Pharmacy block 4W (which later became the Chemistry block when Pharmacy moved to 5E). There was usually some social dancing afterwards. While the men were practising, Betty ran a programme of folky activities for the women (e.g. corn dolly making). It included some sword dancing (for fun only) but, significantly, two dances that Roy Dommett had taught at a Morris-for-women workshop at Sidmouth in 1971. It wasn't really a 'side' at that point (that started later) Betty had started the ball rolling and the women themselves that turned it into a cohesive side, later in 1971/early 1972. This was the first modern-times all-women's Cotswold side in the world (allegedly), around the same time that Gloucester's England's Glory, Cardiff Ladies, Knots of May in Sussex (mainly garland dances) and Blackheath Ladies (later to become Meridian) started. There is some dispute as to who started first, which doubtless will never be settled. Besides, there were women's sides at Spelsbury, Kidlington and Ilmington long before. The men's side joined the Morris Ring in 1975, having had a slight problem with the headed paper reading "Bath City Morris", and so Steve Bazire made a lino cut to add "Men" after the Morris.
After Tubby and Betty moved out of Bath, there were fewer people visiting them at weekends and hence there were few musicians around and some of the momentum was lost. Also students got more serious about work and once more campus accommodation was built, students were less willing to participate in all clubs. Another factor in the fading away of the team was the growing number of buskers in Bath who discouraged the regular Morris dancing tours in Bath.
In later years Richard Lander took over the BCM mantle and kept the side running until the mid-1990s, when eventually it faded out. A feature of many years (including the late 1990's) were the Bath Ceilidhs, held regularly during the winter and spring terms in the main hall at Bath University. The swansong was the 1997 30th anniversary event at Bath, run by Richard and Jo.

What follows is an inevitably incomplete and flawed history of the side. Please add your bits by e-mailing Stephen Bazire (e-mail sbazire@ukppg.org.uk).

The Milk Marketing Board were not interested in this as a promotional photograph, but we tried.

The women dance Colne Royal at IVFDF, 22nd February 1975. Dancers Gill Smith (1), Sally Wearing (2), Jill Robins (3), Tina Forbes (4), Sara (5), Melanie Fuller (6), Maria (7) and Maureen (8).

On 26th May 1975, the women's side on the Countess of Munster's Lawn dancing Colne Royal. Dancers Gill Smith (1), Sally Wearing (2), Jill Robins (3), Tina Forbes (4), Sara (5), Melanie Fuller (6), Rachel Warlow (7) and Maureen (8).

Bath City dance in at the East Suffolk Ring meeting, 12th July 1975. Roy Dommett (Andy Pandy), Ring Squire Morris Sunderland, Tubby Reynolds (complete with torn ligament) and Bob Johnson are visible. John "Instant" Rowlands is musician (yellow jacket) and the dance was Princess Royal "Limpley Stoke", the eccentric choice of squire Steve Bazire.

The 1975 summer tour, seen here in Arundel. This photo appeared in the Lloyds Bank magazine, and a photo taken in the same set was used as a calendar. Dancers include John Starling, Steve Bazire, Steve Palmer (acting as fool, because of not wanting to dance too much, on account of a broken toe), Phil Roberts, Jim Mitchell and Ian Pedder.

Tour on 11th October 1975, immediately before the establishment of the Women's Morris Federation (WMF), the next day in the Small Hall at Bath University.
Excluding Phil Butler, the dancers are:
Standing: Valerie Cranston, Gill Smith, Jill Coleman, Val Parker, Sally Wearing, Margaret Jenner, Jacqui Price
front row Laura Hillier, Sara, Melanie Fuller.

IVFDF in Manchester February 1977. Top row are Jim Cook, Ian "Colne" Lloyd, Carl Filby, Adrian Ayley, Steve Palmer 1, Steve Bazire, Dave Constantine. Second row are Tom Orchard, Kris Lawrence, Melanie Fuller, Steve Palmer 2. Seated are Janet, Gill Corbett, Phillippa Heaney, Rekha Shah, Wenda Cooper (who never quite got over the embarrassment of her knickers being visible in the photo) and Colette Cufflin.

The women take up stave dancing, and take it on tour round the Cotswolds, seen here under the watchful eye of Roy Dommett and Tubby. Dancers are (left to right) Tina Forbes, Fiona Frank, Colette Cufflin, Pippa Heaney, Jill Robins, Joy, Caroline and Megan.

Part standing are Angela Raybould, Janet Oldfield, Ian Pedder, Steve Naylor and Steve Palmer. Sitting are Jayne Adey, Brian, Jayne Rogers, Jeff Dando, Jim Cook, Kris Lawrence and Betty Reynolds.

July 1979 at Ashleworth at a fete. Kindly donated by Angela Raybould. Jaddy, Dick, Tom, Melanie, Mike, Caroline, Angela, Tom, Carl, Tubby, Joy, Kris and Steve are amongst the stars.

The Ayley's reunions were wonderful occasions, especially when, as on 7th July 1984, it coincided with Adrian's birthday. Colette was so organised she even made him a cake. He obviously hadn't drunk enough (having downed a pint in one immediately before), because the candles actually went out!

The June 1997 reunion, organised by Richard and Jo Lander, produced this remarkable photograph of BCM, spouses, children and other friends, as well as producing a few sore heads. A better resolution photo is on the website, which you can download by clicking the photo above, but you'll need Broadband unless you've a lot of patience.

In September 2004, Steve and Jill Bazire's 25th wedding anniversary saw a few BCM dances, with the women's side of Colette, Fiona, Caroline, Diana, Pippa and Kris dancing outside the White Horse in Neatishead.

Members - name and e-mail, era (using the Bath Uni graduation year date where relevant) and any details

Are you here? If so, let us have some more details! Want to be removed? Let me know. Got any additions, corrections, clarifications? Let me know please! Any glaring omissions? I've re-listed everyone according to their first names and put full maiden names where appropriate, and all versions of someone's name, as this shows up better on Google searches - sorry for any errors and if you let me know, I'll correct them.

In addition, the following names don't have surnames....

In Memoriam:

Bath City Legacies - 1

As well as being a Morris side (or two), BCM was also a strong social grouping (with Tubby and Betty being surrogate Dad and Mum for many of us), with many people working their way systematically through the "other lot". There were subsequently many marriages that resulted directly from meeting through BCM, and also many children too. These include Phil and Barbara (Harriet and Mark), Duncan and Maria (?), Tim and Becky, Tom and Melanie (Laura and Sarah), Richard and Jo, Jeff and Penny (Robin and Gill), Jaddy and Dick (Alex), Ian and Phillippa (Paul and Natalie), Tina and Carl (Nicholas, Helen and Robert), Tim and Caroline (2), Adrian and Colette (Jacob, Reuben, Caleb and Rachel), Steve and Pat (4 inc. Rachel), Steve and Jill (Rosemary and Christopher), Neil and Megan (2), Ian and Jayne (2), Doug and Catherine, Martin and Diana (Catherine, Jenny and Rosemary), Martin and Jacqui (2?), ?Leo and Joy (3). That's at least 30, and probably many more. Thanks Tubby and Betty!

If you're on here and it's wrong, or want to be removed, or add anything or any details please e-mail me on sbazire@ukppg.org.uk and let me know. I'll change it asap. Sorry if anything is wrong here, no offence meant, just trying to give a flavour of the side.

Bath City Legacies - 2

And as for ceilidh bands, who knows? The best known are still The Woodpeckers Band, for whom Jeff plays, and has for many years now. Also Dr. Bowser's Brown Bowel Oil Band were an almost integral part of BCM for several years in the late 1970's and early 1980's, with Jeff, Steve Bazire, Paul Woods, Tim Maude, Steve Palmer, Gill Corbett, Martin Lear, Ian Woodhouse, Dave Constantine and others such as Tina and Fiona passing through at various times, with many people as well as Tubby calling (as opposed to calling as well as Tubby) e.g. Adrian, Dick, Martin etc. Tubby even played one gig on pipe and tabor, when Adrian called in Fronglaise in Lille. Before that, Andy Allen's Grumbling Rustics (with Jeff Weed, Phil Butler?) were a force to be dealt with. And they were. Tubby gave all of us the necessary help and breaks to make it into the small time.

Bathcitymorris@coollist.com e-mail group

Fiona has also set up an e-mail group at "Coollist.com" for ex-Bath City people. She uses this for a couple of clubs she's part of - it's a really efficient free service. Go to Coollist.com and scroll down the right hand of the page to where it says 'join a new mailing list'. The name of the list is bathcitymorris@coollist.com - that's all you need to know. If we all join, and get everyone else to join, then we can all write to all of us all at once! It's up to you but it might be a good thing to start. It would make anyone's job a bit easier if we want to do another reunion or if anyone takes me up on my idea of a celebration for Tubby and Betty.

Are you missing? E-mail your details, join the e-mail group and get in contact, at least once.....

Miscellaneous other things:

Roy Dommett's 1994 Simouth lecture: (BCM snippet)

"A great long term influence from the 1970's was the Morris at Bath University. I first met Eric Reynolds, known as Tubby it was said because of a resemblance to Tony "Tub" Hancock, in the first National Folk Week during 1967. He had danced with Bathampton and then Apley. That week I also talked with Hargreaves of Evesham collecting fame at Hereford while watching Chipping Campden, having seen earlier in the week the first public performance by Leyland. They were out with women doing country dances as well, so they were not drinking. Bath discovered that the folk world stopped for the Albert Hall Show so they created the "Albert Out of Town" weekend of workshops, dances and shows. He and I became a well known double act, influencing each others styles of calling, teaching and playing. My personal debt to him is enormous. Later I was able to work up with the Bath City men on an annual cycle the Cotswold traditions of Ducklington, Stanton Harcourt, and Ascot-under-Wychwood, leading to a Ring Instructional in Ducklington, a first for a young side from a university."

Roy Dommett's stave dance talk

Best visit this directly, as it's long, but gives a good overview of the dances and origins.

Bath City memories

There has been some talk of a Bath City review article for Morris matters. This is how it came about, in an e-mail from Jill Griffiths:

Dear All,
I've had a request from Beth Neill, editor of Morris Matters. She had asked Tubby about doing an interview for Morris Matters. This is the result of their conversation ...
"I finally got through to Tubby! We had a good chat and he definitely isn't keen on doing an interview for Morris Matters - mixture of reasons ... but what he agreed was important/worth doing was to capture something about the early days of Bath City especially as the team don't exist any more. He suggested getting a few memories from folks who we know or can contact; collating them in some way and then he will happily look at the "finished" article to see if he can chip in anything to add to, or amend, half-forgotten details.
So, would you like to start the ball rolling - and copy in any for whom you have a contact? I thought a good starting point might be to quote the citation Tubby and Betty received in 1979 when they got the Sidmouth Silver Jubilee award (see MM 2-4). Apart from that the only other real mention of Bath I found was your review in MM 16-2 about the 30 years on. There isn't a profile of Bath at all ..or I couldn't find one! If everyone wrote one paragraph about their memories of, say, learning a dance, their first tour, their first practice, their worst/best Morris tour, how being in a university team affects the way you learn and perform ....and possibly about teams they went on to found or join."

Please help, all of you ....... I await the results with interest. It might be easiest to send it round as a growing document, but please copy me in at intervals so I know it is growing! So, can you help? By sending your own memory or 2 (and that of your other halves where relevant!). Also, by sending this e-mail onto others. Send any contributions to me jill.griffiths@mcs.co.uk and I'll forward them onto Beth. Bath City people contacted so far: John Rowlands, Val plus those above.
Cheers,
Jill
