How to get more information or get your own:
Print off the order sheet and sends to UKPPG PALs, Pharmacy, Hellesdon Hospital, Norwich NR6 5BE, England (+44 1603-421452/01603-421452). Due to a series of people failing to pay for significant orders for the PALs in leaflet form, we will only be able to accept cheques with orders. We may be charitable, but don't see why the majority should pay for the few who could pay, but won't.
For enquiries, you could try e-mailing Nina Thomas at Hellesdon Hospital.
The UKPPG has received many requests for the PALs in other languages. We would dearly love to do this, but there are a number of serious issues that need to be resolved:
- Which languages to prioritise (so far we've been asked for Greek, Turkish, Kurdish, Albanian, Somalian, Urdu, Gujurati, Bengali, Hindi, Punjabi.... etc). NB CPMS have a Clozaril leaflet in Urdu, Gujurati, Bengali, Hindi and Punjabi. Ask Novartis directly.
- There are 19 key UK languages. Urdu is the one most spoken by people who do not speak any English.
- Cost of translations (we know people offer them, but actually getting to do the whole job, including several proofs, is more difficult). It will cost about £150 per leaflet to have translated, plus a separate fee to have "back translation" to English to confirm accuracy, as proof reading is not viable. With 40 leaflets in future, this will amount to about £8K per language for each release.
- Some words aren't even translatable (apparently the words depression, schizophrenia and psychosis don't exist in many Indian languages)
- Many of the ethnic minorities in this country have been shown not to be literate in their own dialects/languages
- To ensure quality, you need a back translation (ie from the target language back into English)
- Typefaces are a problem for some languages
- Updating would also be needed by the same person
